Womanifesting into #art and prayer the idea of my survivor-sister-from-another-mister, #CarolineHeldman, who led our victorious #EndRapeSOL campaign. Caroline said that we should light a candle in the darkness for each of the more than 62 known #BillCosby accusers of which I am one.
Last year, Caroline sponsored my two trips to the #CosbyCriminalTrial. (I went back home to L.A., temporarily, in the middle of the trial for my son’s birthday). Towards the end of the trial, when orchestrated #Cosby shills, fans and rape apologists verbally attacked me on the courthouse steps, Caroline literally held my back. (See photo in this post.)
This first candle marks the beginning of an #artinstallation daily intercession, of which I invite you to join me in prayer. It is for the victim in the #CosbyTrial, #AndreaConstand, whom I consider to be the Joan of Arc in the #WarOnRape. The image I carved, with an x-acto knife, on the white paper bag is a gladiolus flower.
In the Spring of 2015, I publicly disclosed that I survived being drugged, raped and threatened by Bill Cosby in the early 1990s. On May 2, 2015, at a press conference protesting Cosby’s live performance in Cobb County Georgia, I carried with me pink gladiolus flowers (see photo in this post), which are a symbol of peaceful resistance in my birth island of #Cuba. Inspired, Andrea Constand subsequently tattooed pink gladiolus flowers on her left arm. Two years later, in the spring of 2017, as a gesture of solidarity with Andrea, I carried pink gladiolus flowers into the courthouse of the Cosby criminal trial (see photo in this post).
Andrea, you are loved, appreciated and lifted in prayer. Thank you for your pioneering courage. You are the catalyst of the #metoo movement. You are the wind beneath our wings, the quiet springboard of broken silence. You are the diaphragm for the multitude of survivor voices shifting rape culture towards believing women. Thank you for serving as a role model of spirituality and righteousness, of strength, resilience, fearlessness, empathy and compassion.
