Winners of the Emerging Artists Program 2016-17

Local Artists Nyame Brown, Helina Metaferia, Lili Bernard, and Angie Keller Awarded Exhibition Space as EAP Winners Beginning October 19, 2016.

The Museum of the African Diaspora (MoAD) today announced Nyame Brown, Helina Metaferia, Lili Bernard, and Angie Kelle as the winners of the museum’s inaugural Emerging Artists Program. The San Francisco Bay Area artists were selected among 90 applicants for the opportunity to exhibit at MoAD.

Applicants submitted works that address the cultural and artistic richness of the African Diaspora which elaborated on MoAD’s four themes: origins, movement, adaptation and transformation. Nyame Brown is the first artist to exhibit during this round of Emerging Artists Program Awardees with an exhibition opening October 19, 2016, followed by: Helina Metaferia, opening January 25, 2017, Lili Bernard, opening April 26, 2017, and Angie Keller, opening July 12, 2017.

Panelists Emily Kuhlmann (MoAD’s Director of Exhibitions), along with Demetri Broxton  (MoAD’s Senior Director of Education), Karen Jenkins-Johnson (principal of Jenkins Johnson Gallery), Ernest Jolly i(visual artist and museum professional based in Oakland California), Dr. Stephanie Anne Johnson (Professor at California State University, Monterey Bay),  Dr. Sarah Ladipo Manyika (Professor of Literature at San Francisco State University and board member) and Melorra Green and Melonie J. Green (both local arts professionals) selected the winners of the program.
