TAKING A BREAK
© 2013 by Lili Bernard
Taking a break from a ten hour class day in graduate school,
seated in my car in the parking lot,
resting from a week of sleepless nights full of work,
looking up a long brown telephone pole
where the sun turns the top of the wood orange,
while my husband cares for our young ones,
makes me think of our five lively sons
and daughter full of confidence,
growing tall all around me
like redwood trees sprouting fast.
Time waits not for us.
One day it will be
just my husband and I
home alone again,
until the grandchildren come
to sweeten our empty nest
before our life on earth is done.
