Chinatown Summer Nights 2010 - Every Saturday Night in August - Produced by Community Redevelopment Agency of Los Angeles, Community Arts Resources and KCRW (page 1 of 6)

One of the perks of having my art studio in the Chinatown Art District is that I get to be a part of the festive and free "Chinatown Summer Nights," which occurs every Saturday evening in August.

The event celebrates Chinese culture, traditional as well as contemporary. Here, a Chinese DJ spins the turntable and fills Chinatown's Central Plaza with groovy mixes of funk music.

My son Joshua, digs the old school riffs that emanate from the DJ's turntable . . .

. . . while my son Uriel gives coins from his pocket to an elder musician, playing a traditional Chinese instrument.

My three youngest children stop to visit with the local Chinatown Bulldog pup, named "Lashes."

Meanwhile, visitors pour out of the Metro train and onto Chinatown's Central Plaza . . .

. . . and walk through a row of ping pong tables . . .

. . . where novices and experts give it their best shot.

Event goers enjoy the Brazilian food truck in the Central Plaza.

Chung King Road pedestrians are projected onto a big screen.

The Chinese cooking demonstrations on Chung King Court in the West Plaza are highly attended.

An overhead mirror provides a better look at the cooking, before guests sample the food.

My dear friend event photographer Wilki Tom shows up early to lend support and snap some pictures.

Inside my art studio, my baby daughter Zion colors with crayons.

My friends the Kims arrive early. Mrs. Kim grew up in Chinatown.
